Don't you think it's a punk/pop-metal thing? It all sounds so tame now, but Dolls we're pretty snarling and aggressive at the time, even though they were bringing a pop aesthetic to the Stooges wall of noise. KISS, on the other hand, made metal safe for the kids, by adding anthemic pop to the mix and putting it all in a cartoon wrapper. I love 'em both, but for totally different reasons. The live shows were becoming legendary and on top of that they had hooky anthems tailored for radio, something the Dolls never came up with. I often think the same thing about Nirvana and The Pixies. Most of Bleach and Nevermind were based on the blueprint the Pixies laid, but the commercial sound on Nevermind put Nirvana into the stratosphere. The Pixies never quite reached beyond cult status. -----Original Message----- From: audities-owner@smoe.org [mailto:audities-owner@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Mike Bennett Sent: Monday, August 20, 2007 9:54 AM To: audities@smoe.org Subject: Re: Why Kiss and Not Dolls? Kiss was more cartoony -- Alice Cooper was really more of an antecedent to Kiss than the Dolls. Kiss blew fire and puked blood, and that horror movie stuff went down like a storm in concert. Perhaps the Dolls could have become stars if they could have held on for a couple more albums, but they never would have had the success that Kiss had.
