Hey Mark, give it time... Give it time... Time is your friend... :o) I played "Red Dragon Tattoo" on Pure Pop every week for like 6 months or so. If that's the benchmark for FOW, and I just about think it is, they'll have a hard time getting anywhere near it again. That said, there are certainly many great songs on Welcome Interstate Managers, and those two new songs on the 2-CD comp are super. Utopia Parkway is brilliant--the thing hangs together as a whole in a way that WIM doesn't, for me at least. So, I'm looking forward to the new album. We'll see how it plays in these parts. But the new one just seems to have nothing to really pull me in like some of the tracks on past albums. It makes me think they are starting to parody themselves sometimes but then are other times forced to break away from that parody into an uncomfortable territory. They seem like Nick Lowe to me, in a sense ... their sound is so distinctive that anything they do to change takes them away from writing great songs. Like I said, this time the songs don't really grab me. (I can hear Alan saying to give it time!). I don't know Pitchfork because I don't really care about reviews so none of what I'm saying has anything to do with someone elses review. zoogang@cox.net wrote: First of all, I wouldn't give the Pitchfork review any credence. The review reads like a slightly tipsy guy jawing to someone at a bar. The reviewer never really makes a case for Traffic and Weather being a bad album. Other than one specific song mention, he doesn't give specific examples of where the album goes wrong. It sounds like he has it in for FOW more than anything else. Now I've not heard the album yet, and "Someone to Love" doesn't really hook me, to be honest, but I'll reserve my opinion for next Tuesday. I look forward to good things. Meanwhile, the Lewis Taylor album from eMusic is aces. Pure aces. The new Silver Sun races to the finish line with rich harmonies, a good thing. And the new Graham Parked is killer.
