It's funny you ask, because You Am I were quite simply the most remarkable thing I saw in my five days at SXSW. It's hard to say they were "best" when I saw a fantastic set by my favorite band (Buzzcocks), and so many other excellent sets--but there was something miraculous about how they managed to sound so incredibly thrilling and tight while threatening to fall apart in a shambles at any given moment. It was what I imagine it must have been like to see the Replacements at their best, in their prime. They're a great live band, one whose records, good as they are, never quite get them right. You Am I are indeed making a small tour of the States, but SXSW was my only chance to see them. And by the way, the last time I saw them was November 23, 1998--at 7th St. Entry in Minneapolis!
