Record Connection in Ephrata, Pa., just outside Lancaster is a veritable treasure trove of old vinyl, used CDs and new releases. The store is in an easy-to-miss strip shopping center on Route 222. I drove right by it the first time I tried to find it. It's the only record shop I've ever been in that has a full rack devoted exclusively to power-pop. One of my big finds there was the vinyl version of "In Reflection," the insanely rare 1987 solo LP by Marty Willson-Piper of The Church. What makes the record so cool is that there's a lavishly illusrated booklet that explains how Willson-Piper and collaborator Andy "Dare" Mason recorded the LP. They only had a Teac four-track available to them, and it's incredible how many bounces they were able to achieve without significant degradation in sound quality. My favorite snippet might be Willson-Piper revealing that he used a copy of the Sydney Morning Herald to get a snare drum sound for one track. john micek. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, February 14, 2007 11:24 AM Subject: Re: Record store turn-ons > The day that Brian Wilson's Smile was released, I went to the store to buy > a > copy of it.
