Is this not kinda hard to define in the States, given that having a "hit" depends on umpteen different things (airplay, local sales, national sales .... any more?) In the UK, hits are based purely on sample sales (although different charts use different shops for their sales samples, muddying the waters somewhat). Its a shame that although technology is now available to make charts almost 100% accurate, no-one cares any more because singles sales are at an all-time low! I remember back in the 70's listening to the Top 40 (or was it only 30 then?) chart rundown every week and it seemed to MATTER where your fave bands peaked in the charts.
