I have a friend who grew up in LA in the 60s.  When she was a little girl 
her mom used to go to the beauty parlor with Brian Wilson's wife.  After the 
things she heard about Wilson, my friend says she can never hear a Beach 
Boys song and do anything but cringe.  So I totally agree; its often better 
not to know the artist, but just the art.
