Can't say I'm surprised :-( STEVE IRWIN DEAD 04sep06 CROCODILE Hunter and animal conservationist Steve Irwin has died following a sting-ray attack at Port Douglas News of the tragedy came through shortly after 1pm. He was swimming off the Low Isles at Port Douglas filming an underwater documentary and that's when it occured. Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality this morning at Batt Reef off Port Douglas. It is believed to be the fifth sting-ray fatality in Australia, including an April, 1988 tragedy in Innisfail where 12-year-old Jeff Zahmel died from the effects of injuries inflicted by the dangerous marine animal. The boy died from cardiac tamponade, or bleeding around the heart. Wearing his trademark khaki shorts and shirt, and possessing a boundless enthusiasm characterised by his cathch-phrase `Crikey', Irwin became a world-famous cult figure thanks to his massively popular Crocodile Hunter TV show. He also ran the popular Australian Zoo tourist park on the Sunshine Coast. Irwin is survived by his American-born wife and fellow animal rights campaigner Terri and two children, Bindy Sue and Bob.
