I think the Gruesomes were friendly, and were sort of inspired by the 
Munsters and Addams Family.  The neighbors they were drivings of the 
Flintstones? (and now that I think of it, probably inspired by Beverly 
Hillbillies/Green Acres)-- who hated "bug music."
