But neither of those things are happening in the case of the New Cars. 
They're taking something old and trying to make it sound as much like 
it used to as possible.  (Rundgren is even mimicking Ocasek's vocal 
phrasing!)  This is lame state-fair-circuit stuff, about two steps 
above being a tribute band.

I don't think anyone would be saying this stuff if these same people 
had picked a new name and were writing new material together, maybe 
throwing in a couple of Cars and Rundgren covers.  The difference is 
that doing that wouldn't cover Rundgren's mortgage payments, and 
that's clearly his main interest in this gig.
