Yes, drunkeness can ruin a show.  I remember seeing
The Posies (a Jon and Ken acoustic set)at the Monsters
of Pop fest in Nashville.  They passed a bottle of
tequila (I think) back and forth, though they were
well lubricated as the set started.  It was just like
Sherman described, intermittent pleasure with lots of
crap.  However, they did dedicate a song to Anna Borg,
which almost made up for everything else...
