My clock radio was actually the entree OUT of the Top 40 for me.  When 
one of my older sisters got married and moved out of the house, it 
occasioned a reshuffling of the upstairs bedrooms, which meant that 
for the first time (at the age of 8 or so), I got a bedroom of my own. 
I was bequeathed an old clock radio to go on my nightstand, but the 
antenna was broken, which meant that the Denver top 40 station, KIMN, 
came in all staticky, and the only clear station I could get was 
Boulder's own KBCO.  This had been a freeform progressive rock 
station, but by 1978, it was in the process of adding a bunch of new 
artists to its playlist, with the result that by the time we left 
Boulder in 1983, it was a full-fledged new wave station!
