The CQ4 did manage an EP on the German Star Club label and then shared a split lp with Hamburg's own Ein Zwei Four.... the lp was cleverly titled 4x4 and is highly sought after. These tracks are on the Star Club Story CD vol 12. The CQ4 were personal favourites of Siggy Loch who ran the Star Club label but their wild and wooly stage antics never really translated to vinyl. The night they opened for Gene Vincent, Vern Lanceton from the CQ4 found the secret booze flask that Gene hid in his leg brace and drank it all. Vincent found out and attacked them during their set, hitting Vern with his cane & cracking his skull. The crowd loved it and the CQ4 had to follow the rest of their German gigs with an improvised spot in the set where they hit each other with canes and sticks, drawing blood. Brein Epstein thought they might be a suitable backing band for Tommy Quickly but only Chaz Bermbough from the CQ4 is on the "Tip of My Tongue" 45. Chaz, Vern, Dick and Terry did get a Decca 45 in 1964, "Queen Grenadine" b/w "Scousey Girl" but it made no dent on the charts. A follow-up appeared on Pye later in the year, "Crack my Skull" b/w "Doctor I'm In Love" tried to capitalize on their grisly stage show with a rave up Kinks-style rocker (produced by Shel Talmy engineer Tony Berk). It appeared in the US on the Dot label with revised lyrics and was called "Knock my Nogggin". This US version then appeared on a PYE ep called Knock My Noggin with "Doctor I'm in Love", "Mersey Window", and "My Head Hurts baby" (Jimmy Page on lead guitar, Rod Stewart on Harmonica). That was about it, sadly. There is speculation that the Ember album "The Mersey Boots play the Beatles Hits" may have been the CQ4 (this was on the Everest label in the US, Quality in canada) No real info through the 70s (Dick was on the Vertigo label briefly with Tutankamen's Rainbow. Terry drummed briefly with Elkie Brooks, Chaz was in Fresh, who recorded an album while in jail called Fresh Out Of Borstal). Currently, Chaz is a driver (Wed & Thursdays) on the Liverpool Beatle Tour. Vern runs the Mersey Breakfast diner off Penny Lane. Dick & Terry tour the Beatle convention circuit as part of the Legends of Liverpool tribute group, otherwise they are on every weekend at Liverpool Casino). http://www.cozyquilt.com/ * info from Forgotten Beat (The Lads that Liverpool Forgot), by Adam Clayson, 1995, Omnibus, and also Liverpool, Wondrous Place by Paul duNoyer.
