As far as good record stores, the most power-pop friendly is probably Birdland, who has an alright used selection - the last time I was in there, they had a George Usher disc - and has been known to stock Not Lame releases and the occasional relative obscurity. (The Millennium multi-disc set is usually in stock.) There are two Volume CD Exchanges, one in Virginia Beach and one in Chesapeake, and their prices are pretty reasonable. Beyond that, there's Relative Theory, in Norfolk, on Granby Street; they're kind of indier-than-thou at times, but it's a very cool environment. Those are the only places I frequent with any regularity...but if you like punk and rockabilly, Fantasy is worth a visit. As far as good shows, the only one I know is Embrace and Longwave at the NorVa on the 30th...but I'll be out of the running for that; unless my forthcoming daughter gets antsy, my wife's being induced on the 25th, so I'll be knee-deep in dirty diapers by then!
