lessee.... "Twin Falls Idaho" - Built to Spill "Own Private Idaho" - B52s I never did find much in the way of satisfactory songs about Alaska, despite living there for 6 summers, but I always commandeered songs about the midnight sun, which included "Faithfully" by journey and "midnight sun", pref. the Ella Fitzgerald version. And there's a Lyle Lovett version of "West Texas Highway" by Michael Martin Murphey on Step Inside this House: "He was going down to Haskell/With a woman down in Abilene..." Come to think of it, Old 97s have a song on Too Far to Care called West Texas Teardrops - not their best effort, but on point. And someone mentioned Michelle Shocked's "anchored down in anchorage" already, but she also had that song about "..learning to drive on those west texas red clay back roads..." (And Gillian Welch has a song called "Red Clay Halo" about the same general location, I think.) And Ben Kweller has that "Commerce, TX" song - though I don't actually know if that's west texas or not. I particularly like "Texas is beautiful" by Doleful Lions and "Waltz Across Texas" by emmylou harris. and...Er...Jeff Buckley's Corpus Christi Carol? "Thumbelina" by the pretenders starts.."Hush little baby/don't you cry/when we get to Tuscon/You'll see why.." On the seattle/portland tip, Shawn Mullins has a song about each on Soul's Core: "Twin Rocks, Oregon" and "September in Seattle." I know there's another seattle song...it's rolling around in my head somewhere.... NYC? "Rockin around NYC" by Marshall Crenshaw, of course, but "I'll take Manhattan?" (Blossome Dearie vers.) or "NY State of mind?" (Billy Joel) or "NY" (Doves.) It seems an embarassment of riches there - and I'm drunk - so I'll just pack it in tonight. --kelly arma non servant modum __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail Mobile Take Yahoo!
