Wow, mystery solved! I knew it reminded me of something else, but couldn't put my finger on it. I listened to both songs today and you are right, sir. Plus there's that line that's clearly a Tom Petty rip-off: "Even losers can get lucky sometimes." But I have to say that when I saw Amer HiFi open for Bowling for Soup a few weeks ago, they totally stole the show! They sounded awesome and had a great energetic set. I was so psyched to finally see BFS since discovering them with the release of "Let's Do It for Johnny" and was extremely disappointed by them. They were sloppy and boring. Maybe if they had played at a regular bar instead of the teen club without alcohol, I would've had a few beers by then & they would have seemed less sucky. At least I got my Moneys worth out of Amer HiFi & I got home early. ~lisa >> Billy Says: The new American Hi-Fi disc sounds like they listened to a lot of FOW lately too.. Billy Agreed. I was kind of a late comer to this disc as I waited for the domestic release to land. I really enjoy the record but Geek Gets the Girl had me scratching my head wondering what song it "felt" like. Not that they ripped anything off, but it had a vibe that felt very familiar. It took a while for me to pinpoint the similarity, but when I did it was so obvious. Two Words...Dream Police. The chorus chord progression is the same, they have that arpegiated synth low in the mix moving it along and the drum fill going into the last chorus is right out of the Bun E. Carlos drum lesson. Try singing Dream Police over the chorus. It works. Still a very fun song to blast on a spring day, although Dream Police may sound better plus you get the bonus of Tom Peterson's "I know what I want" on the same disc.
