Where can I get details on the NXNE festival? Ralph Alfonso wrote:out by the Stones Place bar is a happening little area, including the Cadillac club across the street, and the cool Gladstone & Drake hotels with swingin' lobby bar DJs and drinkin action (check out the Drake rooftop bar!!), plus all night donut place & variety store. When i was there in feb this year i pulled an all niter as i had to be at airport by 6am so i wandered up to the donut joint at about 3am & was accosted by a youngish bum type who was drunk or stoned or something & muttering & yelling... soon as he saw me he goes "hey man, are you a punk?" and was blocking the entrance. i was a little taken aback as i look pretty square (i think so anyway) so i just said, "My name is Ralph Alfonso and I used to manage The Diodes." he sputtered for a second processing that and he looks at me like a lightbulb just went off, and said... "I used to be in The Sinisters" (a popular Toronto pop punkish garage band). There was some sort of exchange and I remember pointing at him and saying "Don't waste your talent. You know what you have to do". I left the donut shop and he was last seen at a table thinking & muttering about that, i guess, i don't know. the funny thing is I was on the phone to my wife the whole time who heard it all.... i have never found out if that guy was indeed in the Sinisters or what but what an experience. the NXNE festival gears up first week in June so there will be all kinds of activity all over the place. The Queen/Dufferin corner is pretty interesting. I will be staying in that area again for NXNE and who knows who else I will run into - I am pretty much a freak magnet anyway. Must be the goatee.... you know what you have to :) Bongo Beat NXNE Showcase, June 11, Drake Hotel. and then.... donuts at 3am across the street! Ralph Dig that crazy Bongo Beat!
