It's very rare these days for me to play a CD more than once a day, but one CD I can't seem to get out of my player (no, the door isn't stuck) is "Colors Of The Year" by The Whiles, a band from Columbus. All Music Guide compares them to Nick Drake, 'Odessey and Oracle'-era Zombies, and Graham Parsons, and while I see where they're coming from, to my ears they're more like an American version of Amazing Blondel, the UK folk-rock band from the early '70s. The CD is filled with soft, delicate tunes featuring very strong lead vocals, sophisticated arrangements and harmonies that often burst out of nowhere. The Whiles are a pretty young band, making their grasp of this kind of traditional style even more remarkable. I need to thank Keith Cook for turning me on to this band. Had I gotten their CD in time to include it in my Best of 2004, it would have ranked extremely high! You can check them out at www.thewhiles.com -- Pop Rules!!!!! Take Care, David
