With the brief discussion last night about the "Greatest Canadians" list it was mentioned that Pierre Berton was conspicuous by his absence. This truly great Canadian died last night. **************************************** This from a news release today... He was as Canadian as Sir John A. McDonald and as much a fixture in Canada as the red and white Maple Leaf flag. Pierre Berton, the man who both lived in and for Canada, has died of heart failure in a Toronto hospital. Berton was a prolific author and storyteller who differed from many of his contemporaries - he loved Canadian history and reveled in telling our stories. He was especially fond of the railways and tales of the gold rush, helping a country often smothered by U.S. stories keep its own culture alive. He became a familiar face to millions on TV shows such as “Front Page Challenge” and hosted his own syndicated discussion program for many years. He was also a success on radio, where his “Dialogue” with the late Charles Templeton never failed to spark both laughter and controversy. Berton passed away at Sunnybrook/Women’s Health Science Centre. He was 84 years old. ***************** Jaimie Vernon, President, Bullseye Records "Not Suing Our Customers Since 1985!!" http://www.bullseyecanada.com Author, Canadian Pop Music Encyclopedia http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusicPopEncycloPages
