Absolutely atrocious. It seemed like they were going for 5:1 and the stereo mixes were an afterthought. And I hated the way they gated Ringo's snare in "Sgt Peppers" so where he sounds like hes banging on a trash can, the remix of "It's All Too Much" could have been Oasis. >And if you want a good example of excessive use of noise reduction ruining >the sound, listen to "Beatles 1"! You can blame longtime Abbey Road remastering engineer Peter Mew for that, he has done some outstanding work in the past but tends to get lazy and rely on No-Noise and other digital processing gear to clean up the sound to the point it sounds muffled and flat. He should take a tip from Bob Irwin (Sundazed), Bill Inglot (Rhino) and Steve Hoffman (MCA and DCC) and leave the tape hiss and other artifacts in when it cant be filtered out. I've got my fingers the sound quality of the Capitol Versions box will blow away any other Beatles CD for sound quality, even with duophonic, reverb and compression. Billy G.
