The Popdudes version of "Helter Skelter"---featuring the madman McCartneyisms of my good pal Mike Simmons from sparkle*jets uk---actually appears on IPO Volume 5, from two years ago. Last year, on the IPO, Vol. 6 CD, the Popdudes' contribution was an original composition (written by myself and Ken West from Receiver) called "Desperation Time." It featured lead vocals from the incomparable Robbie Rist and the sassy bass stylings of the beloved Kerry "Uncle Susan" Kompost. "Desperation Time" will also be featured on the soon-to-be-released THIS IS ROCK AND ROLL RADIO comp. This year's Popdudes IPO CD track ("Jock-A-Lot") is, as Mr. Bash said, "in the spirit of the commercial parodies which were found in between the songs on "The Who Sell Out"....that's probably because the song was originally recorded as a commercial parody to be found in between songs on the "Who Sell Out" tribute disc that unfortunately never came to fruition. There are other Popdudes tracks floating around (like "Good Morning Sinners," which was found on the sparkle*jets uk tribute disc a few years back) and the rumor is that someone is threatening to put some of them out in some form. There are also a few more original tunes stockpiled that I'd like to record. Anyone wanna sing 'em? Over the years, my comrades in The Popdudes' live performances have included Mike Simmons and Jamie Knight (who are the heart and soul of our fun-filled wackiness), along with Kenny Howes, Robbie Rist, Severo, Brian Curtis, Mike Jarvis, Jeremy Morris, Wayne Resnick, Walter Clevenger, Michael Carpenter, Robin Wills, the guys in Tripsitter, Jeffrey Glenn, Susan West, Bobby Bognar and some toothless drunkfellow who commandeered the microphone one year at an IPO show at Eastgate Park in Garden Grove. It's all been great fun and pretty much done on the fly, just for the hell of it. We'll be doing it again tonight at 8:00, just for the hell of it, at IPO 2004 at Molly Malone's in L.A. It'll be Mike, Jamie, Kenny and myself, along with other folks who are sure to wander onstage. Come see what tunes we pull out of our......errrrrrr.....hats. There's sure to be plenty of MAXIMUM ROCK STUPIDITY, as Mike Simmons has dubbed it. OK, that's more about the Popdudes than anyone needs to know....... John B.
