It was released in January 1985. 1984 was a great year for music, and in looking at my music collection it's surprising how many albums I own from that year, and how all-over-the-map they are as a collective whole -- which says as much about the overall excellence of the year as it does about the eclecticism of my personal taste. Here's my top 40 of 1984: 1) The Replacements, Let It Be 2) The dBs, Like This 3) The Pretenders, Learning to Crawl 4) The Smiths, s/t 5) XTC, The Big Express 6) Prince, Purple Rain 7) Los Lobos, How Will the Wolf Survive? 8) The Dream Syndicate, Medicine Show 9) The Del Fuegos, The Longest Day 10) Greg Kihn Band, Kihntagious 11) The Bluebells, Sister 12) Hoodoo Gurus, Stoneage Romeos 13) Guadalcanal Diary, Walking In the Shadow of the Big Man 14) REM, Reckoning 15) Husker Du, Zen Arcade 16) The Bangles, All Over the Place 17) The Psychedelic Furs, Mirror Moves 18) Lloyd Cole & the Commotions, Rattlesnakes 19) Dwight Twilley, Jungle 20) The Long Ryders, Native Sons 21) Rank & File, Long Gone Dead 22) Let's Active, Cypress 23) Joe Jackson, Body & Soul 24) The Del Lords, Frontier Days 25) Van Halen, 1984 26) Katrina & the Waves, 2 27) The Alarm, Declaration 28) The Minutemen, Double Nickels on the Dime 29) Nick Lowe, Nick Lowe & His Cowboy Outfit 30) Echo & the Bunnymen, Ocean Rain 31) U2, The Unforgettable Fire 32) The Effigies, Forever Grounded 33) The Young Fresh Fellows, Fabulous Sounds of the Pacific Northwest 34) Madness, Keep Moving 35) Shoes, Silhouette 36) Talking Heads, Stop Making Sense 37) The Style Council, My Ever-Changing Moods 38) The Cars, Heartbeat City 39) INXS, The Swing 40) Bananarama, s/t Gregory Sager whose jeans and Cheap Trick t-shirt didn't cut quite the sartorial swath in 1984 of Prince, Cyndi Lauper, or Culture Club
