My belief is, Earth Quake was a functioning band long before Greg Kihn came along.  When Greg Kihn joined Beserkley, Matthew King Kaufman used/borrowed Earth Quake members as Greg's back up band to record a few numbers before Greg assembled his own band (which inclued Dave Carpender, Steve Wright and Larry Lynch).  I think the band became in effect as of "Greg Kihn Again" (the 2nd album)

In a similar situation, Jonathan Richman used The Rubinoos on early Beserkley recordings (New Teller, Government Center) before the second formulation of The Modern Lovers were in place.  Former Rubinoo Greg "Curly" Keranen, wound up joining the Modern Lovers, to be replaced in The Rubinoos by Royce Ader.  BTW, On those songs I mentioned, you may be able to detect the distinctive guitar style of Tommy Dunbar, brother of Earth Quake's Robbie Dunbar, thus completing the circle of this story.

I'm not positive about all this, but pretty sure...
