went and saw urge overkill on valentine's day (sorry for the late report). fell into the ticket through a friend of a friend, which was a good thing, since it was sooold out. i had flirted with going for awhile, but didn't get on it, cause blah blah blackie wasn't there, and blah blah all i really loved was saturation and you know. so. the sights opened up for them, and i knew y'all had talked about them. SO GOOD!!!! i don't know all the right vocabulary a lot, but detroit-garage-60's-hammond organ--doors--early stones--rock and roll--nitty gritty--sexy--yeah!!! good. like them. good stuff. wish there had been more of that. raw. rock. fun. made me feel like i was 18 in 1969. (i'm almost almost 30 in 2004. i've always felt like i was someone/somewhere else...) so....then, this guy who is the friend of the friend pulls a total jocelyn move and we're standing right up front. he's the mega urge fan. now, there's supposed to be some 'special guests,' and my friend, jason, who isn't a real 'show goer,' (he's a phish fan, which is great, but it's different than these double door shows) had asked me who they were going to be. and i'm: i don't know. hopefully someone good/fun/cool, cause it's been a long time since urge has played and it's their hometown and all. well, the whisper comes back from the front row.... i don't really believe it...but... fun! tenacious D!! yay. sure as shit, jack black and kyle (??) take the stage. i've only heard about them, never really experienced 'the D'. so much fun. didn't know what proficient and talented guitarists they were. acoustic, no less. and always, the animated jack black, with all the fake guitar noises (wheedle deedle deedle doo, gank da dank dank weeee). so funny. a true tribute and satire of the 70's rock and prog rock and metal and guitarness of rock and roll. very fun. ending with: and on lead guitar and backup vocal-- KG! and on bass --- no one! on drums --- no one!!! on keys..... no one!!! and rhythm guitar and lead vocal, it's ME, JB!!! fun. so. is it wrong that the sights and tenacious D were better overall than urge? that nash kato sort of made me want to slap him? that they were just sort of ... i don't know?? ack? that they made me wait to the last song of the night for sister havana, and then i was overly disappointed? that their vocals sounded strained? oh well. i hope it's not wrong, cause if it's wrong, i don't want to be right. over and out, jocelyn __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
