You tell em bruce... And the second round of drinks are on me... I'd be glad for Ryan if he cleaned up his act, just like I was for others like Martin Zeller, but the truth is, sometimes the most fucked up people make the best music. Compare the Gear Daddies brilliant "Let's Go Scare Al" from Zeller's alcohol/heroin days to his boring solo stuff. Some of the best concerts I've ever seen had some embarrasing moments, from Patti Smith falling off the stage at Curtis Hixon Hall in the 70s, to Lou Reed falling over the monitor during his rock n roll animal days. Others included Carter USM when noone showed up in Dallas, and they got drunk and bitched all night and were sloppy and hysterically funny. And as much as I loved every fools face show I ever saw, when their equipment got stolen in Houston. They were angry and depressed, and they said fuck it and got drunk and played stripped down to their underwear with borrowed equipment, well, that was the best concert I've ever been to, period. Not the most perfect, but the most honest, and I loved every flaw. Cheers, Gary Rock'n'roll's a loser's game It mesmerises and I can't explain The reasons for the sights and for the sounds We went off somewhere on the way And now I see we have to pay The rock'n'roll circus is in town -----Original Message----- From: audities-owner@smoe.org [mailto:audities-owner@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Not Lame Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2003 12:30 PM To: audities@smoe.org Subject: Ryan Adams - Rock On, Brother! > "This is one of my worst shows ever, but I like it," he said defiantly > near the end. > > By then, half of the sellout crowd had left. Of the ones who stayed, > some were no doubt hoping Westerberg would show up and meet Adams' > needs. I say GOD BLESS, THE BOY for being a wonderfully, publically and honest fucked up mess! So he went off and was actin a bit 'spoiled', or whatever the reviewer wants to call it, he still put up two hours and was himself, for better or worse. At least, he has SONGS to back up any of his behavoir, which is a lot more than, surely, more than the 90% of the bands that have visited the venue this year. I would have loved to have stayed to the 'bitter' end and enjoyed every minute of unpredictability and his raw, imperfect talent.... He's made himself such an easy target. It's become a down right bore-fest w/ all the journalists drooling to pick apart all that he says and does. Come on, he did not dial it in, as most major label bands continually do, day in, week out.....until they disappear for good a year or two later after their second album dies an ugly, proper death as they can't write a half-decent song inside their scripted, predictable live show. Ryan, Rawk On.....Rock Righteously. Drinks are on me! Westerberg, btw, should know better than to buy into what HE reads in the press on such a kindred soul and connection to his former self.
