I would argue that successful albums are also those that set a particular mood -- Marvin Gaye's best '70s work comes immediately to mind, or Can's peak work -- and also those that set out a particular set of aesthetic criteria and then fulfill them completely. I've mentioned many times that I believe the Primitives' LOVELY to be an utterly perfect album in that regard: they have a sound, they have an aesthetic, and they work it perfectly for about 34 minutes then they get the hell out. Add one or remove one track and the whole thing is ruined. S
