Ryan, You're mixing concepts and your history lesson was poor and incorrect. - Mestizo or "half-caste" is someone who has a father and a mother of different races. Hispanic is someone who belongs to the hispanic culture, originated in Hispania and taken to the american continent by the conquerors (the bunch of guys who killed and destroyed everything they found just to make money). So you can be white, black, etc... and be hispanic at the same time. For your info, mestizo is a word all the hispanic countries use, not only Central America and Mexico. - I hope you're not trying to prove anything by telling me the US government makes forms where hispanic is considered a race. Are we talking about the same government that believes that Spain is a republic? Anyway, a single phrase summarizes your idea: "Even though you have no contact with these people we do". Sure I have "contact" with "these people". I work with "these people", I'm friends with "these people" and I'm a one of those you call "these people". I agree with Stewart though. There's no need to go on with this discussion in this mail list. (By the way, I don't remember who besides Seth said something about the little rascals pun. I used to watch it when I was a kid and I loved Alfalfa - alfalfa means the same in spanish and in english). If you were to fill out a questionaire form here especially for government work or something there would be a box to check for race. Hispanic is one of those boxes offered. A brief history lesson for our apparently Euro blue blood friend: A long time ago your ancestoral countrymen came here and many other colonies as well as Central and South America and mated with the local natives. Their offspring are considered hispanic. In some parts of Central America and Mexico they are called Mestizos. Even though you have no contact with these people we do. Just as seemingly all white people are called Caucasian and all dark skinned people are called Black all people of Spanish and South and Central American native descent are called Hispanic. Chances are that the girls to which he referred are of this origin. -r
