in an earlier email, Bob Hutton said "Very interesting to hear you Americans reminiscing about a band which basically never did anything over here." This last summer I picked up some CDs from Amazon.uk for groups like Hello, the Rubettes, Showwaddywaddy, and Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich due to hearing some tracks on compilations. I was suprised, especially with the Dave Dee, etc. CD, to find how good some of this music was. I realize that Canada, due to CanCon rules, has a lot of groups that acheive a level of popularity that doesn't go much beyond the border states. I can understand how a novelty like Lieutenant Pigeon could hit on one side of the Atlantic, but not the other. But Dave Dee and gang's singles were great(I'm ready to spring for the boxset!). Some of the songs by the glitter groups like The Glitter Band and Hello are definitely more appealing than the songs that were all over the airwaves instead of them (to my ears, anyway). They are probably the staples of "oldies" radio over there, while they are obscurities over here. Which got me thinking, what are the American bands, singers, etc. that we take for granted that the international members of the group scratch their heads over? We've had Grand Funk Railroad nominated already -- who else?
