Rhino Handmade's Guadalcanal Diary reissues were already in the works when WEA licensed the first two albums to Collectibles, a situation over which no one at Handmade had any control. It's also worth noting that Collectibles' version was assembled with no input from the band members, who are closely involved with the Handmade discs, providing unreleased tracks, interviews and archival memorabilia. The Collectibles disc sounds decent to my ears, although I seriously doubt that they used the original tapes. But the twofer's hideous cover art and clueless liner notes are in keeping with Collectibles' longstanding tradition of shoddy packaging and careless annotation.
