I won't debate that suicide is selfish as hell. I won't debate that Elliott Smith wasted both his incredible talent and his life. But I don't think anyone here was putting him on a pedestal as any sort of role model. Quite obviously, he was very very troubled. Do you suggest his music isn't worth listening to or admiring because you can't stomach his cowardice in facing down his demons? Can there be no sympathy for someone who felt that much pain, however he may have chosen to deal with it? And do you really think he killed himself to "prove" something to anyone? Like I said, I'm not looking to debate any of this, and I'm certainly not a cheerleader for suicidal heroin addicts, but I for one am saddened by the music world's loss.
