They quite often don't, however.  I think it depends partially on quality
of performance but mostly on whether the people trimming the show down to
an hour has ever heard of the artist.

I think unedited DVDs of full Saturday Night Live seasons would be a really
interesting time capsule, musically speaking.  If you look at an SNL
episode guide, you'll see plenty of intriuging-sounding musical guests.
