This is a terrific bill -- I saw Sukilove's first US gig this past Friday, opening for Bettie Serveert. Pascal Deweeze and company put on a real good show, moving from delicate pop to a couple bits of scorching rock. Deweeze at times reminds me a bit of Paul McCartney and Roddy Frame, sometimes underpinning his melodies with a smidgen of R & B sensibility. However, he's hard to pigeonhole -- let's just say that he is a terrific songwriter and the rest of the band is quite good, particularly the drummer. In fact, the drummer has been subbing for Bettie Serveert's regular drummer -- I could only stick around for 1/2 an hour of their set, but I was extremely impressed -- Carol Van Dyk is just as great on stage as on record, the band plays with spirit and the lead guitarist blows me away, playing melodic lines throughout every song, practically. Two other shows -- Randy Newman this past Thursday -- simply wonderful, over 30 songs in 2 hours with some witty banter interspersed. I was happy that he did 4 tunes off his BAD LOVE record, which, to me, ranks near the top of his impressive catalog. He pretty much hit all eras of his writing. Last night, I saw Shelby Lynne. For six songs or so, things kind of meandered -- not that it was bad, but the songs just sounded nice. But the set started to cohere and the crowd became more captivated and soon she could do no wrong. A very impressive version of "Your Lies", along with a smoking "Evil Man" (much better than on the new disc) and some Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson thrown in for good measure. What a wonderful singer.
