Most powerpop is based on standard 4/4 rhythm patterns, and tinkering with that formula, by default, will render the song unto a genre other than powerpop (ie. mathrock, prog, emo). I know, I know, some non-4/4 patterns (such as 3/4) often crop up in 'lite' pop songs (see Wondermints), but -- again, IN GENERAL -- powerpoppers eschew rhythmic diversity in much the same way Stewart Mason eschews good music. Gotcha, Stew-boy! ;) Personally, I'd like to see a little more rhythmic variation in pop music in general, but that takes something that 99.9% of powerpop writers lack: musical sophistication. Powerpop ain't brain surgery, musically speaking, but, as someone posted earlier, it DOES take a certain measure of talent (or sheer force of will) to play it well. But, for Tracy Partridge's sake, does it ALWAYS have to be in 4/4? It's called imagination, people; use it for a change. Was that too "Lord"-like of a pronouncement? Sorry, but mincing words is not my forte. Social change does not arise out of a climate of political correctness; powerpop will not rise above the slimey, laughable cliche it has become unless YOU change it.
