Howdy all, Long time, no post. Technically speaking, only melody and lyrics make up a 'song', although an arguement can be made for chord structure too. In keeping with the spirit of the poll, here's my idea of what makes a great 'record/song': 1. melody 2. lyric 3. vocals (lead & harmony) 4. arrangement 5. production/engineering A rule of thumb I've been conditioned to believe is that if you've got 1-3 right, then you need to avoid screwing it up by overdoing 4 & 5. If you don't have 1-3 right, then you need to be really good at 4 & 5, but also be good at knowing when you are only polishing a turd!
