Caught this power/punk pop trio at Blake's on Telegraph last night in Berkeley. Opening the show was My Fellow Astronauts, featuring the Hammon brothers from Dance Hall Crashers. They ripped through a "chronological" set of their new material. I'll let Audities know when this band makes a disc since I know that many here will really get into the tight, short tunes that have a blistering back-beat and a clear affection for early Elvis and the Attractions. The Effection is also a three piece group with punk roots (a couple of the guys were/are? in LIMP)--but the sound of The Effection is classic power pop. Sweet melodies, thundering beats, Raspberries-like harmonies, some surfy guitar solos, all wrapped into three-minute songs that are memorable and original. Straight ahead, energetic, engaging --- and just plain cool. The band's new CD "Soundtrack to a Moment" is out now on Adeline Records. After seeing The Effection live, I'm even more convinced that this is a band that will make a lot of year-end lists here.
