Have you heard Cale's cover of Leonard > Cohen's "halleluiah"? It's simply beautiful. It is on a tribute disc > to Cohen. I picked up a used cassette copy of the album at Laurie's Planet of Sound about five years ago, discovered the Cale version of "Hallelujah" on it, and I've been dubbing it onto mix tapes ever since. It's magnificent, both mournful and majestic at the same time. I've gotten into the face of more than one Jeff Buckley or Rufus Wainwright fan who has insisted that someone other than Cale has cut the definitive version of that song. I never saw *Shrek* in the theaters. Last Christmas, when the DVD of the movie came out, the local Super K-Mart had it on the TVs in the electronics section of the store while I was doing my shopping. I decided to waste a little time by standing there and watching it. I was absolutely thunderstruck when the Cale version of "Hallelujah" appeared in the movie; since the audience for Leonard Cohen tribute albums is not a particularly large one, I had figured that Cale's "Hallelujah" was just a well-kept secret that I was spreading one mix tape at a time.
