Welcome to the erratic world of John Cale collecting, Judith. Paris 1919 is a great one. Could be the godfather album of "chamber pop." Fear is my favorite Cale album for its pounding title track, Phil Manzanera's amazing guitar playing on "Gun", and so many other chilling, stomping songs ("Barracuda" - NOT the Heart song!). Vintage Violence, his first solo album is very good too. I'm also a fan of The Church of Anthrax, his instrumental collaboration with Terry Riley (but you've got to be ready for some brutal, repetetive noodling). After that, it's a real crapshoot. His album with Eno from 1990 or so is very good. I've never been crazy about his music from the late-70s on. The late-70s album Slow Dazzle was one of my least-satisfying purchases ever:) Jim www.groovedisques.com
