From: "Durben, Steven" To: "'audities@smoe.org'" Subject: April Stevens ? Message-ID: Hi all, quick question. I recently heard a old song by April Stevens called "Teach Me Tiger". This song is kind of cheesy, silly and sexy to my ears. I love it. It may be more lounge then pop. Does anyone know anything else about her? I had never heard of her prior to this. If I like this is her other stuff worth searching out. Thanks for any info.. best, Steve D Hey Steve, April Stevens, along with her brother Nino Tempo, had a #1 hit with "Deep Purple" in the early '60s, a song which Donny & Marie covered and hit big with in the mid '70s. Although I love "Deep Purple", my favorite stuff by Nino and April is their recordings for White Whale in 1966-67. Their album on White Whale, "All Strung Out", although not produced by Phil Spector, is a Spectorian classic that demands to be reissued on CD. Until then, the next best place to go is Sweet & Lovely: The Best of Nino Tempo & April Stevens, on Varese Sarabande. It contains a nice cross-section of Nino and April's career, including "Deep Purple", "Teach Me Tiger", and some of the White Whale material. I'm proud to say that I wrote the liners for the package along with my good friend Susan D'asaro. IPO Chicago is going really great so far! Thank you to everyone who has posted their reports of the shows. -- Pop Rules!!!!! Take Care, David (N.P. "Mazy" by The Peep Show, an LP on Tenth Planet Records by a UK folk-psych band from the late '60s. Good stuff! I picked it up at Vintage Vinyl Records in Evanston, Illinois, which is the Rockit Scientist of the Midwest (Marc Miller will know what I mean!)
