I think the reason is that the media companies that put out their work have
become so big that they are beholden to the government for things like
keeping the senate from re-visiting how many radio stations it is legal to
own.  The sheer size of the media conglomerate makes them big business, and
subject to government oversight and regulation.  The government leaves you
alone when you play nice (conservative.)  When you don't..
