There was a Burger Chef in Boulder when I was growing up -- I still have fond memories of it. Other dead food-related chains: 1. Taco Villa -- The cheap semi-Mexican food of my teenage years in west Texas 2. Mr. Burger -- As I recall, their food was quite nasty, but they had really cool signs 3. Preston's Milk Store -- A great regional old-fashioned convenience store chain 4. Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips -- There was one of these in Boulder and my memory of it is that it was basically indistinguishable from Long John Silvers, which is probably why it no longer exists 5. Godfather's Pizza -- actually, they're still around, but they're Dead To Me: when I was growing up, the Godfather's Combo was the finest deep-dish pizza ever, but they've lowered the quality and the amount of the ingrdients so much that it's not even the same pie anymore. Top fast-food chains that I can't believe there aren't any of in the Boston metro area: 1. Arby's 2. Long John Silvers 3. White Castle Top fast food chains I miss most intensely from home: 1. Whataburger 2. Whataburger 3. Whataburger 4. Taco Cabana 5. Whataburger Honorable mention: the burritos from Allsups convenience stores. >This might be a Northern California only-chain, but how about Doggie Diner? >Their trademark was a huge leering dachshund head over every restaraunt. There's one Doggie Diner head left, although I think the restaurant itself is closed. The head has been designated a cultural landmark. Charity and I are going to be in San Francisco later this week, maybe we'll get a couple shots of it if we're in the neighborhood. S
