You are going to be stranded on a deserted island, albeit one with electricity and a killer stereo. What's the one album you'll take to listen to for the rest of your life? As much as I love Pet Sounds, Sgt. Pepper, etc., I take... Dick Hyman - The Man From O.R.G.A.N. From the early 60's, it's Lowrey combo organ renditions of spy movie/tv themes - Thunderball, The Third Man, Honey West, I Spy, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., and a ringer of Agent Double-O-Soul. Tony Mottola plays guitar. This album never fails to pick me up if I'm in a bad mood, and makes good moods even better. Part of the effect is nostalgia - my first copy of the album first belonged to my (late) grandmother, and it was a favorite ritual of mine to slip it on the turntable in her console Silvertone stereo the first day I went to her house to visit (for most of my life, my grandparents lived nearly 12 hours away). The Silvertone had a tube amplification system, and still sounds wonderful to this day. I would kill to be able to play organ like this.
