Gary
Thanks for the great info. I pretty much knew of the artists and groups you wrote about except being unaware of Michael Fennelly's origins.
When we'd play at the Bitter End I remember wishing that Kenny was still alive.
I went to DePaul HS in Wayne and NYC radio station (aka the Good Guys) ran a contest where they'd sponsor a contest at the winning school. Amazingly we won and one of the artists were the Critters (classic lineup just before they started to lose members). At that point Bad Misunderstanding was on the charts. It sure beat sitting in Latin Class.
A few years later I found a copy of their Touch 'N Go LP in a cutout bin at Korvettes for $1and still have it.
Enjoy

Singer / songwriter Don Ciccone (RIP), who wrote Mr. Dieingly Sad, was from Plainfield and ended up in the mid-70's Four Seasons lineup. (He sang lead on parts of Who Loves You.) Their other main singer / songwriter Jimmy Ryan grew up in Westfield and was later Carly Simon's guitarist for most of the 70s and I think 80s. Bass player Kenny Gorka (RIP) came from Edison and went on to become the owner of the club The Bitter End in NYC. And Chris Darway (keys) and Jack Decker (drums) were from Scotch Plains. Here's my collection of Critters images (including news articles and rare photos):

Michael Fennelly of The Millennium and Crabby Appleton was also from Westfield. And The Parliaments (later Parliament-Funkadelic) were based in Plainfield, where George Clinton had a barber shop. Turns out Union County was pretty fertile ground for musicians of the 60s and 70s!

I lived in Rahway but not coincident with the years the boys had their hits.  Just down the road a piece from you in the Plainfield/Fanwood area was one of the best vocal bands of the 60s called the Critters. Their harmonies were on a par with better-kbown bands of the day. Soft rock heaven...
