It is a Gimbel/Fox song, but there is some controversy over how the song came to be. It seems undisputed that Gimbel had been playing around with the lyrics "killing" and "softly" together. He was having an affair with the 20 year old Lieberman, who Gimbel and Fox had signed to a production deal. The song was alleged inspired by Lieberman seeing Don McLean, calling Gimbel to describe what she felt, and Gimbel then go back to those words to write the song. Lieberman told that story when she introduced the song. Yet years late, both Gimbel and Fox tried to downplay this version. Don McLean had the story up on his website -- Gimbel tried to get him to take it off, and McLean's people produced a newspaper article with Gimbel quoted as corroborating Lieberman's story.

There is no doubt the team wrote the song, but the treatment of Lieberman reflects poorly on both me, particularly Gimbel.

I don't pipe in here very often - but this is important. This woman 'Lori
Lieberman' did not write "Killing Me Softly"- it was written by the great
Norman Gimbel (who passed away in 2019) and Charles Fox songwriting team
who also wrote "I Got a Name" (best known by Jim Croce), the Happy Days,
Laverne & Shirley themes, as well as Love, American Style. Gimbel also
wrote the lyrics for The Girl from Ipanema.
