A couple of extra points sort of glossed over on Youtube....
The Kingsmen and Paul Revere and the Raiders both got their hands on the song at about the same time. Mark Lindsay of the Raiders claims that they recorded their version first but the Kingsmen got theirs released first. Not only that but the 2 bands recorded their differing versions in the same recording studio in the Pacific Northwest basically the same week. The studio engineer must have thought "what's going on here?" And yes, Jack Ely of the Kingsmen was a young man (I believe 16) and he had braces when he sang which caused his garbled pronunciation. The version by the Raiders is pretty raw and hot as well, but I'm a lifelong Kinks fan and their version is both fey and fun.

And FWIW, here the story of the government's investigation in the 1960s
of the supposedly obscene lyrics of the the Kingsmen's version:

There actually IS a swear word uttered, but it not from the singer
himself! And it's really hard to notice.
