I second the Brian Protheroe recommendation.  In my mind at least, he's 
one of the great all-time underappreciated pop songwriters.

On those first three albums of his (1974-1976), he penned many classics 
-- "Enjoy It" might be (depending on the day) my favorite song ever.  
But the great thing about Brian is that he has continued to release 
fantastic songs ever since.  More recent songs like "Holyoke Hotel" and 
"Broken Bridges" are utterly fantastic.
