Just found out late Sunday about the passing of the great Charlie Haden. He died July 11th with his wife and family at his side. I had read that he was ill and unable to play, but never that it was fatal. So I was shocked at just the news, and that I didn't find out for two days. Guess it's not front page news.
He will always be considered one of the great bass players ever. I saw him live many times playing with Ornette Coleman, Keith Jarrett, and Pat Metheny. But it was his long association with Ornette that holds a special place in my music memories. He was on Ornette's ground breaking "The Shape of Jazz to Come " as well as all of those Atlantic albums that truly carved a new path in the history of jazz.
He also led groups of his own like The Liberation Orchestra, and more recently Quartet West. He also released a family album playing with his children Josh, Tanya, Rachel, and Petra. He also released many duet albums with Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, and Hank Jones. As I write this I am listening to " Come Sunday" by Charlie and Hank Jones. It is a gorgeous collection of spiritual songs , including a fitting " Nearer my God to thee".
An incredible musician, and a gentle soul has left us. Rest in peace Charlie.
If deaths come in threes , than I must mention the death of jazz singer Jimmy Scott and the conductor Lorin Maazel.
