Of course, it depends on what kind of break up we're talking about... :-)

Martin Briley's "Salt of My Tears" is a good snarky one for the "kiss off, never want to talk to you again" approach. I'd add that and  Ben Folds Five's "Song for the Dumped" to the Nilsson (which is indeed the best, but only if you're really feeling it. Which I have :-)

Todd Rundgren's "It Wouldn't Have Made Any Difference" is a multipurpose champ, but particularly saying "boy, you really blew it" in such a sweet and sensitive way that it will guarantee future regret.

Surprised Tommy Keene hasn't shown up here yet.  "Take Back Your Letters" (an outtake from Songs From the Film) is a killer, and then there are those big, wall of guitar heart-wrenching ballads

Marshall Crenshaw's Our Town is a heartbreaker.

The last two songs on Sam Phillips' The Indescribable Wow "What You Don't Want Hear" and "Out of Time" are just gorgeous, and great for the "I'm hoping we can still be friends" split, though in different ways.

Joe Jackson's got a lovely, catchy song called "The Other Me" from the underrated Laughter & Lust album, which is great for the "I'd probably rather be with you, but can't give her up" split.

Then again, you could just use all of Aimee Mann's catalog. Even though she's often singing about record companies, she's got something for virtually every occasion or mood:  biting (I Should Have Known"), self-pitying (4th of July), scornful ("Stupid Thing") - and that's just from Whatever! I'm kind of partial to ""Believed You Were) Lucky"  from 'til Tuesday's Everything's Different Now, which covers her split with Jules Shear.

OK, that's enough bile and melancholy for now. :-)

more subtle, but her answer to Go Your Own Way is Dreams by Stevie Nicks & company.
