Jennifer, you're always bringing new Austin local groups & musicians to
the fore, and many of those inspire comments (the term we sadly now
confer to what we used to call conversation and discussion). And you're
not flogging your own stuff, but the stuff you hear and love. What could
be better? I love sampling new stuff, & have listened to much of what
you've introduced, & replied to a few when inspired. Please continue.
Please take my complaining for what it is. Gratuitous self promotion is
a self-imposed term from posters themselves, and I found it amusing at
the time. Audities folk in prior times could be tough (passionately)
when flogging bordered on spam. And I heard stories (a couple directly)
of musicians complaining they got little promotion/$$/whatever out
Audities-List members. Audities was never a marketplace, tho some folks
mistakenly thought it would be like a band fansite, with folks ready to
plunk down cash for whatever was served up . What they found instead
were folks not unlike themselves: misfits, musicians, music business
types, writers, collectors, lurkers, a few trolls, just plain fans (me),
combinations of all these and the simply unclassifiable. Tho possibly
consumers when moved, that movement was strictly performed to each
subscriber's own drum beat. Individually subscribers surely purchased
(still purchase?) a ton of music.
Back to Facebook. It being what it is, Audities there ebs & flows
discussion wise. I guess when there's not alot of dancing about
architecture, self promotions tend to stand out. What's missing, and
what I dislike about most current social media, is the lack of cohesive
structure. A comfort zone. I feel adrift even when participating, going
thru motions but not emotionally connected. And all that openness, with
music discussions like these mixed side-by-side with everyone's daily
life tribulations, feels creepy. I love reading your (you Auditiers)
stuff about music and the music world within the bounds we've set, but
all that other stuff mostly no thanks (as I hope you'd not care to read
of my dull life either). Facebook has serious structural problems that
I doubt can be corrected, per its origins as a people directory (its
very name) & the focus on "Self". Zuckerberg, with 57% ownership, will
undoubtedly be running things for a lifetime, but where is he taking
everyone? Bizarro world IMO. Some suggest Facebook reflects
Zuckerberg's personality, like Apple & Jobs, which as good an
explanation as any.
Cheers,
- Michael

One of my faves of 2012. Insanely great pop record!
