Saw them live last week at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. The show was
pretty much everything I hoped it would be.
The two new songs that were performed--- "That's Why God Made the Radio"
and "Isn't It Time" are both very solid. The CD upon first listen is very
good. But as much as I love the Beach Boys (well, Brian's Beach Boys,
anyway), the last several BW CDs and this BB CD feel like a bit like a
novelty act. The harmonies are still great, Brian's band is phenomenal and
just right for backing him up and allowing him to receive the homage he
deserves for his career.
But all the main BBs--- Brian, Mike, Al, David and Bruce, while they seem
to be into in and obviously enjoying the love that's being shown them---
are all so far over the hill they can see a different horizon.
I'll give the new CD a bunch more listens, but after that, I just doubt
it'll be any different that BW's last few efforts. Great to hear in the
moment with very little to be remembered later.
What I'd REALLY like is new Wondermints' music....
