Ouch. I've heard similar stories about Bomp and a few others tho much in
the past.
My in-laws used to be in the coin-op games business (Boom Ball was their
most recognized game, both customer & revenue wise - skee-ball shot from
cannon), for which distribution was mostly run by small time mafioso, so
payment was always up front, except for direct sales to Circus-Circus,
major amusement parks, Pizza Time theater, etc. It was standard practice
for a coin-op distributor to literally disappear overnight, with its
assets reappearing a few states over under different owners.
