I just watched the first Fullmetal Alchemist series myself and found it very good. Not quite Bleach or Death Note good, but it kept me interested through the whole run. Bleach has also had some really good music over the credits, btw. I'm no expert, but the Japanese band I really like is The Oranges. Because they sound like a Japanese version of The Vandalias.
